Wagner group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin feared dead in plane crash: Jet believed to be carrying warlord 'falls from the sky' north of Moscow two months after failed coup

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner group, is feared to have died in a plane crash in Russia. The incident occurred two months after his failed coup attempt against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A video captured the plane falling from the sky in the Bologovsky district of the Tver region. The wreckage was later found in a field, engulfed in flames.

Initially, it was uncertain whether Yevgeny Prigozhin, also known as Putin's chef and with close ties to the Kremlin, was on board. However, recent reports indicate that his name was included in the passenger list.

Rosaviatsiya, the Russian aviation agency, reported that Prigozhin was among the passengers. Despite initial confirmation of his death by AfP, the exact identities of the casualties are now unknown.

Authorities have stated that the business jet crash resulted in the deaths of ten individuals, including the mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin. Witnesses of the crash heard a loud bang before witnessing the plane plummeting from the sky.

Prigozhin, aged 62, led a coup against Putin's regime precisely two months ago. Following the failed attempt, he had been warned about potential threats to his life and took extensive precautions regarding his security.

A channel associated with the Wagner group claimed that the plane had been shot down by air defenses, but this information has not been officially confirmed. However, sources close to Prigozhin revealed that although the aircraft belonged to him, he typically traveled on a different plane.

Earlier this week, a video emerged showing Prigozhin in Africa, where he expressed his determination to strengthen Russia's influence by deploying Wagner troops on the continent.

Ksenia Sobchak, a former Russian presidential candidate, stated, "According to my sources, an Embraer plane belonging to Yevgeny Prigozhin has crashed in the Tver region, approximately 15 kilometers from Khotilovo. Our information suggests there were three crew members and seven passengers. It remains unknown whether Prigozhin himself was on board."

Sobchak, often referred to as Putin's "goddaughter," shared this information.

A local witness reported that parts of the plane detached as it descended from the sky.

Prigozhin had been advised to avoid tall buildings due to the risk of accidents after leading a coup targeting Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Army Chief General Valery Gerasimov.

He was known to employ body doubles as part of his elaborate security measures.
