Wales and Northern Ireland keep inflated grades as students in England suffer sharpest drop

Students in England have suffered the sharpest decline in GCSE grades - more than in Wales or Northern Ireland.

The percentage of top GCSE grades in Northern Ireland has fallen for the second year - but remains higher than before the Covid-19 pandemic.

In Wales, results were midway between those awarded in 2022 - the first year that students sat exams following Covid-19 - and 2019.

In England, the percentage of GCSE entries awarded 7/A or above was 21.6 per cent this year – down 4.4 percentage points from last year.

In Wales, it was 21.7 per cent, down 3.4 points. And in Northern Ireland, it was 34.5 per cent, down 2.5 points.

It has led to questions about whether the distribution of results in the UK has been fair this year.

'It's important to get back to reality,' says schools minister

Grades in the UK have fallen but results seem to have been more generous in Wales and northern Ireland, leading to questions about the distribution of marks.

Top GCSE marks have tumbled by 4.3 per cent as passes returned to pre-Covid levels.

But Schools Minister Nick Gibb defended the lower results, saying it is a 'very fair system.'

Speaking on the BBC's Radio 4 Today Programme he added: 'It's important to get back to reality to maintain the value and integrity of GCSEs and A-levels.'
