With 731 killed, New York on Tuesday recorded its deadliest day for Covid-19, but at the same time confirmed that it may be reaching a phase of stabilization of the pandemic, which across the United States alone is around 380,000 cases and 12,000 deaths.
New York, the epicenter of the disease in the country, accumulates almost 139,000 of those positives - already surpassing Italy and approaching spain's total - and 5,489 deaths, according to the authorities' latest balance sheet. After two consecutive days with fewer than 600 victims, the state experienced an uptick with 731 deaths in the last 24 hours, the highest daily since the crisis began. "Behind all these numbers is an individual, a family, a mother, a father, a brother, a sister. A lot of pain again today," lamented the governor, Andrew Cuomo, at his daily press conference.
In the midst of suffering, however, New York begins to see some reason for hope. The daily number of new hospitalizations, despite an increase in the last 24 hours, shows a clear downward trend according to Cuomo and the same goes for income in intensive care units and intubations.
The governor said the state's projections say that "a stabilization is being achieved in the total number of hospitalizations" and that, a priori, the worst scenarios anticipated will not be met. All this, he insisted, is a sign that the rules of social estrangement and the economic stop by the authorities are working and must continue.
More dead than 9/11
In New York City, the epicenter of the epicenter, coronavirus deaths officially surpassed the deadly balance of the 9/11 attacks on Tuesday, in which nearly 3,000 people died. But there are signs there, however, that the explosion of contagion is starting to subside and that in recent days "something has changed," said mayor Bill de Blasio.
Among the positive indicators, De Blasio noted that the demand for respirators has remained more or less stable for the last 24 hours, partly holding back one of the great concerns of the city, which was to run out of sufficient equipment in the coming days.
Meanwhile, it was learned that a crew member of the Armed Forces ' Comfort' hospital ship, anchored in New York to support the city, has tested positive for Covid-19 and is isolated from his peers and patients.
All over the country
In neighboring New Jersey, the second-most-case state in the U.S., authorities on Tuesday announced a further tightening of confinement measures after the total number of deaths reached 1,232, with 44,416 cases confirmed and without the "peak" of the outbreak still in sight.
Across the country, cases continue to accumulate in several hot spots, including outbreaks advancing hard in major cities such as Detroit, Chicago, or New Orleans. In Florida, the total count is now 14,504 cases, with 283 dead, and with its main focus in the south of the state, including the Miami area.
Despite the pandemic, the state of Wisconsin held its primary election on Tuesday, after justice invalidated Democratic Governor Tony Evers' decree to postpone the election until June 9.
