Fury on leafy Sussex street after man blocks off public footpath and REFUSES to let neighbours go near it

A Neighborhood Divided: The Woodland Drive Path Dispute

A bitter feud has erupted in a seemingly idyllic Sussex suburb over a blocked footpath. The conflict, which has escalated to include threats and intimidation, has left residents feeling unsafe and frustrated.

The dispute began last October when a storm damaged a wall, blocking a well-used public footpath that runs between two exclusive homes in Woodland Drive. Despite promises from the property owners to clear the rubble and repair the path, nearly a year has passed with no progress.

Residents have grown increasingly frustrated with the situation and have filed complaints with the local council demanding immediate action. However, the neighbor on the other side of the footpath has been obstructing efforts to reopen the path, leading to heated confrontations and escalating tensions.

At a recent public meeting, the neighbor angrily berated councilors and residents, drowning out their concerns. Many residents have expressed fear and anxiety about the situation, with some even considering selling their homes.

The police have been called to the scene multiple times to address the escalating conflict, but the threats and intimidation continue. Residents have reported being verbally abused and threatened in the street, even in front of their children.

The local council, Brighton & Hove City Council, has intervened in the matter and announced plans to issue a section 78 notice under the Building Act 1984, which grants them the power to remove dangerous structures. This will allow the council to clear the rubble and reopen the footpath.

The council also intends to erect fencing on both sides of the footpath to ensure safety and install CCTV cameras to monitor the area. Any remaining signs indicating the path as private will be removed.

Despite the challenges and delays, the council remains committed to reopening the footpath as soon as possible. They understand the importance of this public right of way to the local community and are taking steps to resolve the situation.

The occupants of the house that has been blocking the path have declined to comment.

Sussex Police is investigating reports of threats made outside the address in Woodland Drive, Hove, and is urging witnesses to come forward with any information or footage.
