OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN STARTS | LIVERPOOL TEAM NEWS V ASTON VILLA

Liverpool welcome Aston Villa to Anfield on Saturday in what will be an emotional afternoon on Merseyside.

Indeed, Steven Gerrard will return to face Liverpool for the first time in his career as he leads his resurgent Villa side at Anfield.

The former Liverpool captain took the Villa manager job after the sacking of Dean Smith, leading his new side to three wins in four games.

The Reds will be looking to keep up the pressure at the top of the Premier League, where they sit in second place behind champions Man City - who beat Wolves 1-0 earlier today.

Half-time ratings

Alisson Becker 6

An untimely slip almost caused a problem but otherwise quiet before break.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 8

Real threat with his deliveries, whether from set-pieces or open play, and the one Liverpool player who looked to open up Villa from deep.

Joel Matip 7

Defended stoutly in tricky conditions and went on one trademark foray first half.

Virgil van Dijk 6

Strong-armed by Watkins on one occasion that led to a booking. Didn’t have it all his own way.

Andy Robertson 7

Could have had a penalty when caught by Nakamba and constantly offered himself as an overlap down the left.

Fabinho 6

Rarely needed defensively as Villa concentrated on keeping players behind the ball.

Thiago Alcantara 6

Crowd purred at one pass but, like his fellow midfielders, couldn’t hit the heights before break.

Jordan Henderson 6

A couple of good thrusts but struggled to find room in the first half.

Mohamed Salah 6

Threatened early on but Villa sought to keep the ball away from him after that, but had one shot saved by Martinez.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 6

Didn’t really do much wrong first half – the problem was he was not involved for significant stretches.

Sadio Mane 7

Consistently bothered Villa right-back Cash and wanted a penalty after a coming together between the pair.
