Coloured contact lenses can make for an eye-popping fright with hues like zombie yellow, blood vampire or black wolf on novelty shelves every year before Halloween.
But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning revellers to beware of the harmful side effects that could haunt those who illegally buy decorative lenses over the counter.
According to the agency, unauthorised contact lenses present risks including corneal ulcers, corneal abrasion, vision impairment - and even blindness.
IF YOU WANT DECORATIVE CONTACTS: Get an eye exam from a licensed eye care professional, even if you think your vision is good Get a prescription that includes the brand and lens dimensions Buy the lenses from an eye care professional or a vendor that requires a prescription Follow directions for cleaning, disinfecting and wearing the lenses.
