Horrifying moment Brit, 40, slams against the rocks after misjudging leap into pool of water below, suffering 'serious injuries', at notorious Tenerife beauty spot

40-year-old British jumper was stretchered away as his pals looked on in horror

In a horrifying incident at a notorious beauty spot in Tenerife, a 40-year-old British tourist misjudged a cliff jump and slammed against rocks, suffering serious injuries. The incident occurred at Charco El Tancon, a sea cave located in Puerto Santiago in northern Tenerife. The man was stretchered away from the scene with severe leg injuries.

The man leapt too far, overshooting the pool below and headed for the rocky outcrop

Disturbing footage of the incident surfaced, showing a group of men, believed to be friends of the injured man, counting down from five before he jumped off the cliff. Unfortunately, he overshot the landing spot and landed feet-first on the rocks surrounding the pool below. The witnesses reacted with shock and terror as they witnessed the accident unfold, with clear indications that the man had suffered at least one broken leg.

Charco El Tancon, known for its crystal clear waters, attracts tourists from around the world. However, it is also considered highly dangerous. The calm waters can quickly become turbulent, posing a risk to swimmers relaxing in the pool who may be thrown against the rocks. Marina Rivera Saldana, a Spanish influencer with two million Instagram followers, faced criticism for posting photos of herself swimming at the prohibited spot in September of the previous year.

The cave has a tragic history, with several fatalities reported over the years. In light of the danger, it is listed as "permanently closed" on TripAdvisor, and locals warn people against visiting.

Witnesses to the accident reported seeing a group of tourists performing somersaults and dives off the rocks into the open sea before moving to the spot where the accident occurred. By the time emergency services arrived, the injured man had been pulled out of the water by his companions. He was then transported to Hospiten Sur University Hospital, where he received treatment for his serious lower limb injuries.

The current condition of the injured man remains unknown. An organization based in the Canary Islands, dedicated to preventing aquatic accidents, condemned the reckless behavior captured in the video footage. They emphasized the need for prevention and common sense, urging people to avoid endangering their lives through reckless actions and highlighting the importance of respecting warning signs.

The site where the accident occurred is part of a complex of natural pools situated on the Los Gigantes cliffs. It was once described as one of the most beautiful places in Tenerife before bathing was prohibited. Visitors were cautioned to exercise caution, as the pool can be highly dangerous during high tide when the cave fills with water. Observing the ocean conditions and avoiding unnecessary risks were strongly advised.

Reviews on TripAdvisor echo the dangers associated with the cave. One visitor shared their experience of witnessing how quickly the cave fills up and the potential risks involved. They emphasized the importance of being mindful of the consequences and the lack of control once inside the cave. A local warned against entering the water, stating that people die there every year due to the sudden waves that can pin individuals to the cave's ceiling. They stressed that there is no way out and urged visitors not to attempt swimming in the area.

Another traveler mentioned seeing warning signs at the start of the steps leading to the pool, indicating that it is used at one's own risk and lacks lifeguards. They observed strong waves even on relatively calm days, emphasizing the potential hazards caused by the sea's swell.

This unfortunate incident serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of respecting safety guidelines and exercising caution when engaging in activities in unfamiliar environments. It is crucial to prioritize personal safety and avoid unnecessary risks, especially in locations known for their inherent dangers.
