Open wide! Discover what the color of your tongue reveals about your overall health and well-being. Renowned dentist Dr. Deepak Aulak sheds light on the significance of tongue color and shares crucial insights that could potentially save lives.
According to Dr. Deepak, a healthy tongue should exhibit a pink color with small bumps, known as papillae, evenly distributed across its surface. However, various colors of the tongue can serve as telltale signs of underlying health issues that should not be ignored.
"The tongue is an incredible organ," says Dr. Deepak, emphasizing its role in taste, chewing, and speech. "But it's far more than that; it's an indicator, and any change can be your body warning you that something else is going on with your health, and it's time to see a doctor. It could even be a matter of life and death, so it's vital that people recognize the warning signs their tongue is telling them."
While interpreting tongue color is subjective, Dr. Deepak advises consulting a dentist for more information if individuals notice anything unusual.
Beyond the healthy shades of pink, here are ten different tongue colors that may indicate deficiencies in specific nutrients or the onset of an illness:
White Tongue: This condition manifests as a thick, white coating on the tongue, which can cover the entire surface, appear at the back, or form patches. It often results from overgrown or inflamed papillae caused by burning the tongue or bacterial infections. Additionally, white tongue can be a sign of anaemia, scarlet fever, lichen planus, leukoplakia, mouth ulcers, or oral thrush.
Yellow or Brown Tongue: A yellow or brown tongue usually indicates bacterial growth due to poor oral hygiene, smoking, alcohol consumption, or the intake of substances like coffee, black tea, or products containing thymol, menthol, witch hazel, peroxides, or eucalyptus. Dehydration, psoriasis, jaundice, or certain medications can also cause a yellow tongue.
Orange Tongue: Similar to yellow tongue, an orange tongue is often a result of poor oral health. However, it can also be caused by taking specific antibiotics or consuming foods rich in beta-carotene.
Red Tongue: Known as "strawberry tongue," a bright red tongue can indicate various conditions, ranging from vitamin deficiencies to allergies. Geographic tongue, which gives the tongue a red appearance with white patches, is one such condition. It can also be a sign of food or medicine allergies, vitamin B deficiency, Scarlet Fever, Erythroplakia, Glossitis, or Kawasaki Disease in children.
Grey Tongue: Individuals with geographic tongue may develop grey borders around the red patches on their tongue. Additionally, people with eczema or those taking certain medications like antibiotics, antifungal drugs, antidepressants, or iron supplements may experience a grey tongue.
Black Tongue: Black hairy tongue occurs when papillae on the tongue's surface grow excessively and trap food particles and bacteria, resulting in a black discoloration. Poor oral hygiene, smoking, tobacco chewing, certain medications, radiotherapy, diabetes, or HIV can contribute to this condition.
Purple Tongue: A purple tongue may indicate poor circulation, a heart condition, or Kawasaki disease—a rare inflammatory condition affecting blood vessels in young children.
Green Tongue: Resembling yellow tongue, a green tongue can be caused by poor oral health, smoking, dry mouth, or specific medications.
Blue Tongue: A blue tongue could signify cyanosis, characterized by insufficient oxygen in the blood. Causes of cyanosis include blood disorders, blood vessel disease, inadequate lung oxygenation, or kidney disease. It could also be a sign of sepsis, a severe infection requiring immediate medical attention.
Seek Urgent Medical Help: If the skin, lips, or tongue appear pale, blotchy, or blue, it is crucial to call emergency services (999 in the UK) as it may indicate a serious medical condition such as sepsis.
Understanding the messages conveyed by the color of your tongue can provide valuable insights into your overall health. Regular dental check-ups and consultation with healthcare professionals are essential to properly interpret the signs and take appropriate actions for your well-being.
