Unveiling Meghan Markle's Lifelong Hair Obsession and the Poignant Connection with Her Father
Thomas Markle Opens Up About a Heartbreaking Tale of Racism in Meghan's Childhood
Meghan Markle once confided in a business advisor about her remarkable "mile-long" legs and her desire to showcase them for maximum commercial appeal. However, her assets extend beyond her legs, as evidenced by recent photographs taken at the Canadian ski resort of Whistler.
While her beaming smile and impeccable fashion sense draw admiration, it is Meghan's hair that truly stands out as her "crowning glory." Even though she is no longer a working royal, her chestnut locks, meticulously maintained and styled, continue to captivate audiences. Kadi Lee, known as the "hairdresser to the stars," disclosed on Instagram that Meghan's stunning new look is the result of a combination of red and golden undertones, exuding an extraordinary shine.
While Meghan's hair has been a lifelong obsession, as it is for many women, one aspect of her hair journey has remained largely undisclosed on social media—the touching role played by her father, Thomas Markle. Thomas shared with me that he would wake up as early as 5 am to help his young daughter straighten her hair with an iron, ensuring it looked exactly as she desired.
"When she wanted her hair straightened, it would take hours to do before she went to school," he reminisces. "But it was something I gladly did."
Now 79 years old, Thomas Markle, once an Emmy award-winning lighting director in Hollywood, became an amateur hairdresser when Meghan came to live with him after his marriage ended. Unfortunately, Meghan has not spoken to her father since he suffered two heart attacks just before her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018, preventing him from walking her down the aisle.
Thomas recounts his astonishment upon discovering that his daughter's hair subjected her to racism at a young age. During a holiday trip, while driving from their home in Los Angeles to Florida, they encountered difficulties finding a salon in rural Texas that would wash and straighten Meghan's naturally curly hair.
"We tried several, but no one would accommodate us because I was a white man with a mixed-race child," he reveals.
As Meghan entered her teenage years, she learned to style her own hair and apply makeup, honing her skills while spending time on sets and in studios with her father, who worked as a lighting director. Meghan observed and learned from the professionals working on popular American shows like "General Hospital" and "Married with Children."
It was during her breakthrough as an actress, particularly her role as a "suitcase girl" on the show "Deal Or No Deal," that Meghan adopted the glossy look she is known for today, employing specialized treatments to protect and strengthen her hair against damage.
In 2011, Meghan explained the extent of the effort—and cost—involved: "My mum is black, and my dad is Dutch and Irish, so the texture of my hair is densely curly. I've been getting Brazilian blow-outs for a couple of years.
A Brazilian blow-out is a semi-permanent treatment that uses keratin to penetrate the hair cuticles, resulting in smoother and more manageable hair. The effects typically last up to four months, but some Los Angeles salons charge over £400 ($500) per treatment.
Meghan's most recent hairstyle, described by her stylist as a "dynamic shade of brunette," perfectly complemented her attire during a recent public appearance in Canada. She wore skinny white jeans, a white cashmere sweater worth $675 (£530), and an off-white quilted coat. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were in Canada to promote the upcoming Invictus Games, which will be held in Whistler in one year's time. The games, founded by Prince Harry in 2014, focus on supporting sick and wounded servicemen and women.
While Prince Harry took center stage during their visit, Meghan's hair, now sporting a new reddish tinge, garnered significant attention. Fans praised her flawless locks on the Instagram page of the Highbrow Hippie salon, a favorite of celebrities like Julia Roberts. Comments poured in, proclaiming her hair as the best it has ever looked, with a remarkable shine and enviable health.
On various occasions, Meghan continues to style her own hair, often opting for an elegant "ballerina bun." There is speculation that she occasionally uses high-quality hair extensions to add length and volume for special events. In this aspect, as with everything else she sets her mind to, Meghan has become quite skilled.
As a source described, "Meghan can style her own hair and do her own makeup to a professional level because, like everything she commits to, she practices tirelessly until she achieves perfection."
