The Met Office cautioned of perilous climate conditions on Thursday and Friday with as much as 10cm of snow falling on the most elevated ground, just as the danger of risky frigid patches and of lightning strikes from disconnected rainstorms.
Meteorologists say Britons will feel the cold short-term as temperatures are set to rapidly fall into the evening, bringing a boundless ice.
Forecasters gave a yellow climate 'snow and ice' cautioning for Thursday, covering quite a bit of western Scotland, down through Manchester in the north-west of England and in any event, arriving at the edge of Stoke-on-Trent in the Midlands, alongside the western half on Northern Ireland.
Regular slush, hail and snow showers could 'prompt some disturbance to go during Thursday night and Friday morning', meteorologists said, cautioning that streets and rail routes are probably going to be impacted.
Some 'brief blackouts are conceivable', the Met Office said, adding there was a danger of 'disengaged lightning strikes'. The snow and ice cautioning runs from 8pm tomorrow to 11am on Friday.
Met Office representative Grahame Madge said: 'As we go into the short-term time frame temperatures will begin to drop and in a portion of the protected glens in Scotland we could see less 10C or considerably colder temperatures recorded. Across the UK there won't be many spots that will stay above freezing.'
The Met Office later posted a report on Twitter, saying: 'It will be cold this evening, temperatures will rapidly fall into the evening giving a boundless #frost. Provincial spots will be considerably colder, - 12C is conceivable in rustic Scotland.'
As winter nibbles after a record-breaking gentle new year, in the early long periods of Thursday temperatures could feel as cold as - 4C in Glasgow while in Edinburgh the Met Office has said suburbanites would confront temperatures as low as - 3C.
