China has extended its New Year holiday to fight the killer coronavirus outbreak which has now killed 81 people and left countries including the united kingdom , US and France drawing up plans to evacuate their residents from Wuhan city.

In an unprecedented move, officials have sealed Wuhan and neighbouring cities, effectively trapping tens of many people, during a bid to contain the spread of the SARS-like virus.

They announced the Lunar New Year public holiday would be extended by three days to Groundhog Day as medical workers, the govt and therefore the military desperately attempt to stop the outbreak.

It comes as a team of scientists following the outbreak closely announced they think quite 100,000 people are infected already, considerably quite official toll of around 2,800. Their estimate comes after another team of researchers last week predicted 350,000 might be infected in Wuhan alone by February 4.

The World Health Organization will meet in Beijing within subsequent 24 hours to debate what must be done. Officials met last week and decided against declaring a worldwide emergency – it isn't clear whether or not they will reconsider this in Beijing.

Cases of the never-before-seen virus in China have now been confirmed in every province of the country except Tibet. Mongolia today closed its border and is refusing to let vehicles or pedestrians from China into the country.

Twenty-four deaths were reported overnight, including a nine-month-old baby in Beijing – the youngest victim of the outbreak thus far .

Microsoft founder Bill Gates's Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation today announced it might donate $10million (£7.64m) to assist stop the outbreak which it had been already giving funding to public and personal firms in China.

The Chinese government insists it's continuing drastic efforts to contain the outbreak. Measures currently in situ reportedly include:

Transport restrictions in Hubei province, which is home to around 60million people – most conveyance has been stopped, along side flights in and out
The New Year bank holidays will continue until Groundhog Day – an extension of three days
All of China's state-run schools will remain closed until further notice in an extension of a faculty holiday
No businesses in Shanghai, including supermarkets, are going to be allowed to reopen until February 10
Many businesses closed voluntarily before the vacation began – among them the Disney resorts in Shanghai and Hong Kong , and Starbucks and McDonald's stores in Hubei
Chinese citizens are banned from booking holiday tours and flight and hotel packages in other countries, consistent with the ny Times
