Smooth, creamy and devilishly moreish, they say it’s best prawn cocktail you’ll ever taste – finished with crisp iceberg lettuce for that satisfying crunch and sandwiched between two slices of fresh oatmeal bread.
So does it live up to the hype? Even before I open the box, I can tell it’s no run-of-the-mill sarnie. The serving – of both prawns and sauce – is so generous that the filling is almost spilling out the sides of the scrummy-looking bread, which is soft and thick cut.
It’s heavy and pleasingly chunky, the sort of sandwich my Granny – who loved a prawn cocktail – used to make when I was little. There’s plenty of filling, but not so much as to make the bread soggy – and the lettuce has been cleverly placed to hold it all in place, so there’s no mess if you’re tucking in at your desk.
From the very first bite, there’s a fresh, citrussy punch to the cocktail sauce, plenty of fiery heat from the Tabasco and a velvety, buttery mayonnaise underneath. I can just taste the brandy, which balances out the tartness of the sauce with hint of sweetness and a lingering savoury note which leaves a lovely taste in my mouth.
The prawns are huge: plump, juicy bursts of salty flesh which transport me straight to the seaside. Mouthful after mouthful is beautifully seasoned, perfectly-proportioned and it’s all so fresh it tastes as if it was caught this morning.
The lettuce is a lovely touch: crisp, crunchy and refreshing, it’s like a mini salad on the side of a decadent prawn cocktail. And the bread is soft, squishy and packed full of nourishing, oaty goodness – so I feel far better about wanting to tuck into a second sandwich before I’ve finished my first.
I’m in heaven. The humble prawn sarnie has never tasted so good. And it’s bang on trend with the retro revival – think corned beef, cheese and pineapple sticks and alcohol-infused jellies – seen on our picnic rugs this summer.
