Photographing Brazil's 'Christ the Redeemer' - Photos and Video

October 12 marks the 80th birthday of one of the most famous statues in the world: Cristo Redentor, in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro.

The statue, translated as 'Christ the Redeemer' in English, has been photographed millions of times, but there is one picture that stands out from the rest.

Custodio Coimbra, the man who took the picture, describes in his own words the snapshot of a lifetime.

The party-loving residents of Rio de Janeiro are never known to turn down a celebration - and so it was no surprise they marked the 80th birthday of their iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in style.

Thousands ascended the 2,330ft Corcovado Mountain to pay their respects to the octogenarian landmark which towers - and welcomes all with open arms - over their city.
A series of concerts and vigils - and the creation of a communal 26ft cake - were also held to commemorate the newest 'Wonder of the World' in the host city of the 2016 Olympics.
