Alan Billis has been mummified following his death, and it has been covered by Channel 4

Taxi driver Alan Billis told his wife he'd agreed to be mummified after death, so how did she feel finally seeing 'Tutan-Alan'?

Mummy: Alan Billis has been mummified following his death, and it has been covered by Channel 4
Making history: The late Alan Billis and his wife Janet, before he became the first man to be mummified Egyptian style for at least 3,000 years

Alan Billis was fond of proclaiming that, when the time came, he wanted to be buried with minimum fuss. No frills, no drama: a cardboard box in the back garden would suffice.

‘He was totally unsentimental about dying,’ says his widow, Jan. ‘He wasn’t religious and he didn’t believe in an afterlife. His view was, when you’re dead you’re dead — that’s that.’

In the event, Alan’s journey to the other side has been far from low-key. As Jan says, with a fond smile, in death her late husband has been treated like royalty. Quite literally.
