Jilly Cooper died from fatal head injury after fall at her Grade II listed home, inquest hears

Dame Jilly Cooper, the beloved author renowned for her romantic and scandalous novels such as "Riders," "Rivals," and "Polo," tragically passed away due to a fatal head injury sustained during a fall at her Grade II listed home in Bisley, Gloucestershire. The inquest revealed that the 88-year-old was discovered by her family at around 5 p.m. on October 4, 2025, after suffering an unwitnessed fall—likely down a staircase, as indicated by a trail of blood in that part of her home.

Emergency services arrived approximately 20 minutes after the call, finding her conscious but disoriented, with no clear memory of how the accident occurred. She was immediately transported to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, where her condition deteriorated despite medical efforts. Dame Jilly Cooper passed away peacefully the following morning at 8:30 a.m. on October 5, surrounded by her loved ones.

Senior Coroner Katy Skerrett concluded the death was accidental, caused by a traumatic subdural haematoma—a severe brain injury resulting from the fall that led to a skull fracture. Medical assessments deemed the head injury devastating and likely fatal upon impact.

Dr. William Nattrass, Dame Jilly’s longtime general practitioner, noted she had experienced previous falls but was managing well and remained vibrant despite decreased mobility. The sudden accident, however, had catastrophic consequences.

Dame Jilly Cooper's novels have captivated readers for decades with their vivid portrayals of upper-class life, love, and drama, often set against the backdrop of the equestrian world. Her work recently gained renewed attention following the popular television adaptation of "Rivals," starring well-known actors like David Tennant and Danny Dyer. After her passing, tributes flowed from fans, literary peers, her children Felix and Emily, and even Queen Camilla, who hailed her as "a legend" and a "wonderfully witty and compassionate friend."

The inquest and surrounding coverage not only mourn the loss of a literary icon but also remind the public about the dangers of falls in older adults, which remain a serious health concern.

Dame Jilly Cooper's legacy endures through her prolific writing and the affection held by a wide readership, symbolizing a life richly lived despite the tragic circumstances of her passing.
