Arsenal's Set-Piece Mastery Under Scrutiny

 Arsenal's Set-Piece Mastery Under Scrutiny

Arsenal's recent success from set-pieces has caught the attention of both fans and critics. The team's impressive goal tally from corners and free-kicks is largely attributed to the expertise of their set-piece specialist, Nicolas Jover. Jover, who joined the club in 2021, has implemented innovative training methods to enhance Arsenal's attacking prowess.

However, a French publication, L'Equipe, has shed light on some of Jover's techniques that have raised eyebrows. The report suggests that Arsenal uses a unique training method involving a second goal net perpendicular to the main goal, with dummies placed in the second net. Players are then challenged to shoot at specific targets, scoring points against each other in a competitive ranking.

Jover has also focused on refining players' attacking runs from set-pieces. He insists on players repeating specific movements until they become second nature. This meticulous training has paid off, as Arsenal has scored several crucial goals from set-pieces this season, including the winning goal against Tottenham in the North London derby.

While Arsenal's set-piece tactics have been effective in the Premier League, they may face challenges in the Champions League. L'Equipe warns that referees in the Champions League may be more stringent in enforcing the rules regarding player behavior during set-pieces.

Arsenal's opponents have accused the team of using "dark arts" tactics, such as time-wasting and gaining unfair advantages during set-pieces. The team has faced criticism for these tactics, especially in their matches against Manchester City and Tottenham.

Despite the controversy surrounding their tactics, Arsenal remains a formidable force in the Premier League and the Champions League. Their set-piece prowess, combined with their overall strong performances, makes them a serious contender for both domestic and European titles.
