Chiefs fan calls blackface claims 'scary,' sues Deadspin
Young Kansas City Chiefs fan accused of wearing blackface sues sports blog
A lawsuit has been filed by the family of a 9-year-old Kansas City Chiefs fan against Deadspin, a left-wing sports blog. The young fan, Holden Armenta, expressed his fear and distress after being accused of racism. The defamatory article not only targeted him but also subjected his family to hate and even death threats.
The lawsuit alleges that the Deadspin article was intentionally written to exploit the situation for financial gain and attention. It accused the young boy of racism and attempted to tarnish the reputation of the entire Kansas City Chiefs fanbase. The Armenta family decided to take legal action after the sports publication was threatened with defamation. The lawsuit specifically addresses the derogatory article written by Caron Phillips, titled "The NFL needs to speak out against the Kansas City Chiefs fan in Black face, Native headdress."
The lawsuit highlights how the Deadspin article falsely portrayed the family as having hatred towards both Black people and Native Americans. It also claims that the article aimed to propagate the idea that racism and hate were being taught in the Armenta household.
One of the key grievances mentioned in the lawsuit is the article's featured image, which only showed one side of Holden's face painted black while omitting the red-painted side, representing the colors of the Chiefs. This selective portrayal was viewed as a deliberate attempt to smear the young boy's reputation. Many have criticized Deadspin for its unethical journalism in choosing this photo.
Holden's parents have confirmed that he himself is of Native American descent. The controversy surrounding the Armenta family's battle with Deadspin has gained significant attention, with calls for justice and support for Holden. The family repeatedly requested the removal of the article but received no direct apology. Deadspin made a minor edit to the story, expressing regret for appearing to attack the young boy.
However, the addition of this note was seen as insufficient to undo the damage caused by the initial defamatory remarks. The family claims that Holden faced a barrage of offensive language and death threats as a result of the blackface accusation.
The Deadspin controversy has sparked widespread discussion online, with many expressing solidarity with the Armenta family and hoping for a favorable outcome in their lawsuit. Others are cautious, hoping that Deadspin will not find a way to evade responsibility for the harm they caused.
