Hollywood acting legend Kirk Douglas has died aged 103.

The Spartacus star died on Wednesday and is survived by his wife of 65 years Anne Buydens and his three sons Michael, Joel, and Eric.

His son Michael Douglas, an acting icon in his title , revealed the news of his father's death in an emotional statement to People magazine.

'It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and that i announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103,' he said.

'To the planet , he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of flicks who lived well into his time of life , a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and therefore the causes he believed in set a typical for all folks to aspire to.

'But to me and my brothers Joel and Peter he was simply Dad, to Catherine, an exquisite father-in-law, to his grandchildren and great grandchild their loving grandfather, and to his wife Anne, an exquisite husband.

'Kirk's life was well lived, and he leaves a legacy in film which will endure for generations to return , and a history as a renowned philanthropist who worked to assist the general public and convey peace to the earth .

'Let me end with the words I told him on his last birthday and which can always remain true. Dad - i really like you such a lot and that i am so proud to be your son.'

Douglas suffered a stroke back in 1996 that left him with slurred speech and damaged facial nerves but it didn't stop him attending the Academy Awards ceremony fortnight later to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award.

He had been in relatively healthiness since his stroke.

Douglas was the son of Jewish Russian immigrants who rose through the ranks to become one among Hollywood's biggest-ever stars.
