HOW THE 'ATTACKS' PLAY OUT: FIREARMS OFFICERS SENT TO RANDOM ADDRESS BEING HELD BY TERRORISTS
Yesterday's
exercise was the latest in what is now a weekly training routine
running for Scotland Yard's firearm officers from November through until
March.
The
Met say the five month course 'will test every armed response vehicle
officer and Counter Terrorist Specialist Firearms Officer (CTSFO)'
within their Firearms Command.
It
is based on the scenario of an organized terrorist cell, who are armed,
taking over a shopping mall. A number of workers and shoppers are
killed and others taken hostage.
Officers
are told little about what to expect, other than they are responding to
reports of a number of well armed subjects who are indiscriminately
shooting shoppers with automatic weapons. They are also made aware there
is word of casualties and people hiding in the building.
Reacting
as they would if facing a genuine terror situation, the team arrive at
the venue - which changes every week - and set up a control point, from
where efforts to confront the threat begin.
Built
into each exercise is a number of high risk situations that the armed
officers must confront and deal with, including hostages that must be
rescued. The routines will feature a lot of shouting from the 'terror
cell' and the police, all of whom are using training rounds.
CTSFOs are deployed and it is up to the tactical firearms commander to decide on their deployment, as it is everyday.
As
much as the training ritual aims to prepare officers for taking down
extremists, it also tests their tactical decision making in regards to
when it is safe enough to call forward ambulance service and fire
brigade colleagues, allowing for the rescue and treatment of any
casualties.
