TOP TIPS TO STAY SAFE WHILE SHOPPING ONLINE

TOP TIPS TO STAY SAFE WHILE SHOPPING ONLINE

With more online shoppers expected than ever before this Cyber Monday, it will be a popular day for cyber attacks on shoppers.

1) Look for the ‘s’ in http. Before you enter any payment information, make sure the site is secure by checking it’s a ‘https’ site and there is a padlock in the address bar. Although this isn’t a guarantee that the seller is honest by any means, it does mean your payment details are secure.
2) Buy from trusted sites. The cyber world is full of fake retailers, so before you part with your money, make sure it is a trusted site. Remember, if something is too good to be true, then it’s probably not a real deal.
3) Avoid public internet. It’s easy to connect to wi-fi anywhere these days, but avoid it when entering personal and financial information. This is the perfect place for cyber attackers to snoop and steal your personal data. Avoid public internet for online purchases.
4) Have strong passwords. When you make an online purchase, you will often have to register and set a password. Always make it a strong password to prevent hackers getting in and stealing your data.
5) Make use of online payment systems such as Paypal. This means your payment information is stored on a secure server and it is not revealed to retailers when you buy something, giving you protection against fraud.
6) Remember your consumer rights. When shopping online, you have the same rights as though your were shopping in-store, which means the product must be satisfactory and as described otherwise you are entitled to a full refund.
7) Be careful what information you reveal. Crooks will try and get as much information from you as they can, such as your pin, birth date or even your national insurance number. You should never disclose this.
8) Check your statements regularly, not just once a month. Make sure all the transactions on there are yours and for the right amount. If there is anything suspicious, call your bank and cancel your card immediately.
