Since bursting on to the scene in 1990 with hit record 'Nothing Compares 2 U', O'Connor has courted controversy over issues unrelated to her musical career.

In 1992 she famously tore up a photograph of Pope John Paul II live on US television.
She was ordained as a priest in 1999 by a breakaway church in Lourdes, which is not recognised by the traditional Catholic Church. 

In 2010, she called for Catholics to boycott Mass until there was a full investigation into the Vatican's role in the issue of child abuse.

Earlier this year, she hit the headlines when she blasted Kim Kardashian's raunchy Rolling Stone magazine cover which saw her baring her breasts in a racy sailor's outfit.
