Bearded Eurovision queen Conchita Wurst to head Crazy Horse show in Paris

Bearded Eurovision queen Conchita Wurst, who rose to global fame when she won the 2014 song contest, is bringing her distinctive brand of sexy to Parisian cabaret club the Crazy Horse.

The experience has been nerve-wracking for the drag queen, whose real name is Tom Neuwirth.

She said she was intimidated at first by the skill of her fellow dancers: “I visited the show and I was like, ‘I’m not good enough, I’m not sexy enough, I don’t move that well, and I’m just a singer’, and now after two weeks of rehearsing – well, we haven’t rehearsed for two weeks, but last week three days and now three days – it feels quite good, and it’s a match,” said the performer.

Previous collaborators at the legendary Parisian cabaret include burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese and model and actress Pamela Anderson. But Conchita Wurst is the first drag queen to be invited.

“I love being a woman on stage, and I’m not a biological woman, so this is something special in the first place, that I’m the first ‘special lady’ in this show, but I really feel comfortable being a lady on the stage. But as you say this kind of sexiness is something different. I mean, they’re real women, you know what I mean? So I really have to find also this side of my female character,” she said.

Since winning Eurovision in Copenhagen last May, Wurst, who is openly gay, has spoken on a number of LGBT issues and performed in front of the European Parliament as part of a campaign to fight discrimination and support equal rights.

“For me it would be great that people would just accept the way you are, you know? If they focus on your character and if they focus on what you do that would be great. And they don’t judge a book by its cover,” she added.

Austrian singer Conchita Wurst will be performing at the Crazy Horse from November 9th to 15th. Her single ‘Heroes’ is just out and she is currently working on her first album.
