It’s always nice when the winner isn’t known until the very last
event, and in fact Lalas had led from the second event all the way
through to this last event, before he was beaten by the mighty Savickas.
It was a great showing from Lalas and I’ll be shocked if he never goes
on to win a WSM title or two for himself. Hafthor Bjornsson is one to
look out for too, and if he can keep improving and we get a fully fit
Shaw, Hollands and Poundstone in 2013 then it could be one of the all
time great competitions.
My one big complaint, apart from the commentary and presenting which
saw those involved making awful puns and never referring back to what
has happened in previous heats, is the length of the programme. At just 1
hour, with the adverts taken out we only got a little over 40 minutes
of the actual programme. Remove the event intros and leaderboard
analysis and we actually see very little of the athletes competing. In
fact we saw so little of Ervin Katona that it was only looking back at
the results that I realised he pulled out during the 5th event. If they
can’t get more coverage on television then I would be more than happy to
pay for a DVD/Blu-ray release showing the competition in it’s entirety.
Hell, make it a 3 disc set and show some more footage from the
qualifiers, because we don’t see much of those either. Speaking of DVDs –
if like me you are a huge geek for World’s Strongest Man, then you’ll
be pleased to know you can buy WSM 80s and 00s (there should be an 90s
set too but it’s out of stock currently) sets as well as Giants Live DVD
sets over on the official World’s Strongest Man website.
I can’t recommend these sets enough, to be able to look back and see
the likes of Jon Pall Sigmarsson, Geoff Capes, Magnus Ver Magnusson and
Mariusz Pudzianowski in action is fantastic.
I’ve kept this year’s final on my planner as I hope to watch it with
my little boy, something I used to do with my Dad when I was just a
little kid too. Christmas and New Year just wouldn’t be the same without
World’s Strongest Man and long may it continue.
