Expendables 2  Sylvester Stallone VS Jean Claude Van Damme in a fistfight

Sylvester Stallone takes on Jean Claude Van Damme in a fistfight in the new Expendables 2 trailer

Action fans have often pondered how Rocky Balboa would fare against the martial arts masters portrayed by Jean-Claude Van Damme.
And they will soon find out the answer, as Sylvester Stallone is seen facing off against The Muscles From Brussels in a new trailer for The Expendables 2.
They lock heads after emerges Van Damme's character, the subtly named Jean Vilain, is leading a rival group of mercenaries, and is trying to obtain five tonnes of plutonium to hold the world to ransom.

In a typical action movie villain speech, he is heard telling a colleague: 'Six pounds of pure plutonium is powerful enough to change the balance of the world.
'Imagine what five tons will do.'
It begins with Stallone's character Barney Ross taking off his combat webbing, and indulging in a spot of fisticuffs with his rival.

And while it briefly seems he is getting the upper hand, the brief scene ends on a cliffhanger as Sly is seen taking one of Van Damme's trademark jumping spinning kicks right on the jaw.

Watch you don't pull a muscle: Barney Ross may be making a mistake taking on Jean Vilain hand-to-hand

Take that: Stallone block's his rivals attack and manages to land one of his famous haymakers

Ouchie: Jean-Claude looks stunned after feeling the force of his rival's fists
Their face off is made all the more exciting, as it has emerged the Expendables team are on a revenge mission after one of their members is brutally killed by Vilain during what seems like a routine mission.
And while it has not emerged who the team member is, martial arts fans would surely be excited to see a deadly duel between Chinese kung fu master Jet Li, who plays Yin Yang, against his fellow martial arts screen superstar.

However there is plenty of other excitement in the trailer, which is another taster of the action that can be expected when the action sequel is release on August 17.

Brought to heel: Things look grim for Stallone's character after being caught by a famous Van Damme spin kick

The boys are back in town: And they have a new female member named Maggie, who seems impressed by Statham's cap
One man army: Van Damme's mercenary band does not boast any star names besides him
It opens with the team cutting through lines of enemy soldiers like a hot knife through butter, with Stallone even managing to easily best a group of grunts who had him surrounded.
His fellow team members including Dolph Lundgren's  Gunnar Jensen Randy Couture's Toll Road and Terry Crews' Hale Caesar all return.
And in one particularly visceral moment, Jason Stratham's Lee Christmas is seen carrying out an assassination while dressed as a monk.
There are also some new team members, with Aussie former Neighbours hunk Liam Hemsworth playing Billy 'the Kid' Timmons and Speed Racer star Yu Nan starring as Maggie.

Ready for action: The group look as tough as ever even in their civilian clothes

Now you're talking: But they are far more intimidating when they don their combat gear

Kaboom: And when the Expendables are about there are inevitably explosions aplenty
Their troubles are again catalysed by Bruce Willis' Mr. Church character, who enlists the mercenary band to carry out the seemingly simple job that soon turns nasty.
However when things go wrong and one of members is viciously killed, they seek revenge in hostile territory where the odds are stacked against them.
The Die Hard star seems to have a much bigger role in this film, as he is seen teaming up with Arnold Schwarzenegger's returning cigar chomping character Trent Mauser during a firefight.
In an hilarious clip, The Total Recall star is seen ripping the door off a Smart car, as they try to escape an industrial building

I'm back: And Arnold's character Trent Mauser shares the Governator's love of cigars

A Smart idea? Arnold does not seem very impressed at Bruce Willis choice of getaway vehicle

Bad temper: The Austrian Oak rips the door off the vehicle before complaining about its size
The unimpressed soldier tells Church, 'my shoe is bigger than this car,' before using his rifle to take out a swathe of bad guys.
Perhaps most exciting of all for action aficionados, Chuck Norris is also seen being drafted into the team, after he is heard explaining: 'You're gonna need more men if you expect to get out of here alive.'
The $100m budgeted old-fashioned action flick certainly seems to live up to the hype, with plenty of firefights, explosions and fisticuffs.
Lionsgate gave it an extra $20m to take the sequences to a new level after the original was a surprise smash hit, grossing almost $300m at the box office in 2010.

The Hunger Games are over: Liam Hemsworth appears as Billy 'the Kid' in the action film

The best for last: Action icon Chuck Norris is ready to lend his legendary abilities to the Expendables
