UFC On FX 2 Results SUNDAY, MARCH 4, 2012 : Down, But Not Out

In an event where three of the four contests included comebacks, it could not have been more fitting for UFC on FX 2 to be hosted in a foreign land that is associated with the boomerang.  The first comeback was too little, too late; the second was overshadowed by a questionable decision and the last produced fruit.  Any way you slice it, only one of these bouts proceeded in one direction.
A look back at a night of admirable deception:
Court “The Crusher” McGee def.  Constantinos “Costa” Philippou via Unanimous Decision
The final round, in comparison to the previous two, was night and day as far as McGee was concerned.  Understanding the sense of urgency, he did better in living up to his moniker.  He executed his first takedown, landed a flying knee and even attempted a few back spinning strikes.  Although the latter moves didn’t find home, they were representative of what was expected from the Ultimate Fighter Season 11 winner.  With the late surge displayed by The Crusher, he was too deep in the hole that Costa dug him.  Philippou takes the main card’s opening contest without any dispute.
Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson def. Ian “Uncle Creepy” McCall via Majority Decision
A final, failed takedown attempt somehow resulted in McCall getting full mount on Johnson and getting in more ground-and-pound.
Looking at the resolve that Uncle Creepy showed in response to the early adversity he faced, it is baffling as to how the judges saw fit for Mighty Mouse to advance into the Flyweight Tournament finals.  The collision was epic, but the final verdict, not so much.
Joseph Benavidez def. Yasuhiro Urushitani via Technical Knockout (Punches, 0:11 of Round Two)
Round two concluded in effortless fashion as Benavidez landed a right hook that send Urushitani crashing to the mat.  Benavidez secured a mounted position, pounded away and 0:11 into the second round, the Japanese Flyweight was rendered defenseless.
Martin “The Hitman” Kampmann def. Thiago “The Pitbull” Alvez via Submission (Guillotine Choke, 4:12 of Round Three)
The final round almost resembled the first weith back and forth exchanges between the two combatants.  Alvez had spurts when his punching prowess reigned supreme and Kampmann brought forth a display of striking that showed he was in this until the bitter end.  With 1:05 left, it appeared that The Pitbull found the opportunity needed to close out the main event with a stiff right jab that buckled Kampmann.  From there, he followed with a righthead kick and a two-piece punching combo that should’ve iced this fight.  Instead, Alvez went for a double-leg takedown that allowed for Kampmann to secure a guillotine choke that guaranteed the win with 0:48 remaining.
What’s next for Martin Kampmann?  How will Thiago Alves respond to a squandered opportunity?  Given the controversial ending to the McCall/Johnson affair and the eventual championship match between Johnson and Benavidez, what effect will this have on McCall when it comes to title contention?
One can only imagine how these stories will unfold.
