Proud parents Elton John and David Furnish speak about the joys of fatherhood

He has developed a reputation as being something of a diva over the years.

But Elton John yesterday hinted that even he has been undertaking one of the more unpleasant tasks of fatherhood - changing nappies.

'I love the smell of nappies,' he said at a Hollywood junket to promote Gnomeo & Juliet, the animated film he has executively produced, alongside his partner David Furnish

Fatherhood is fantastic,' he added. 'It's been the most wonderful thing that’s happened to me after meeting David.'

Elton, who yesterday attended the Hollywood premiere of the film and performed songs from the soundtrack after its screening at El Capitan Theatre, said that being a dad is 'surprisingly relaxing.'

'This little soul that you're feeding, changing, bathing and telling bedtime stories to is a blank canvas,' he said.
And all it needs is love and nurturing. When he gets to talking and running around, I will probably feel a little different.'

Elton and David's son Zachary was born via a surrogate mother on Christmas Day in Los Angeles.

And they showed off the little boy in a US magazine earlier this year.
Aside from fatherhood, it seems that the 63-year-old singer had quite a lot on his mind.

He used the press junket to slam Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage in California, saying he is 'fed up' of being a 'second class citizen' in the U.S.

'As I get older, I get more angry about it.

'In this country, we need more dialogue. We don't need any more stone throwing. We don't need any more vitriol.

'We need people to say, 'OK. I'm straight. You're gay. Let's get along. I'm Republican. You're Democratic. Let's work together.' I'm sick and tired of people being hateful to each other in this country.'

The singer also said he was disappointed at the reaction of some members of the Church of England who questioned his parenthood following his son's birth.

'Everyone is entitled to have their own beliefs and their own spirituality,' he said.

'The big difference is that the dogma of the church can be so hateful and divisive.

'It's stuck in the stone age. We don't live in the stone age any more. The church is losing people left, right and centre because people are fed up with the rhetoric that they're giving them.'
