BOTH carriageways of the A1(M) dual carriageway near Dishforth have had to be closed following what police describe as a 'extreme collision' at approximately 5pm this afternoon.
The incident, believed to contain a vehicle and a motorcycle, took place on the northbound carriageway just south of junction 49 with the A168 at Dishforth.
But police said both carriageways needed to be absolutely closed so emergency services and the air ambulance ought to attend.
Police are advising motorists to avoid the place if possible, as the northbound carriageway may be closed for a while.
Eyewitness Maxine Gordon, who become within the passenger seat traveling south down the motorway, said that through 5.40pm the southbound carriagway had re-opened.
But she stated all three lanes of the northbound carriageway had been still closed.
There had been tailbacks all of the manner to the junction with the A59, she stated.
"Because it is so warm, people are getting out of their automobiles and standing at the carriageway to try to stay cool."
Maxine stated the collision seemed to have worried a bike and a car, although this is but to be showed via the emergency offerings.
