Two lanes of the M4 had to be closed following a "multi vehicle" crash near Newport.

The crash, which happened at around 3pm on Friday afternoon, is causing heavy queuing between junctions 24 (24 (coldra) and junction 25 (Caerleon).

Gwent Police initially closed the whole M4, westbound, after the "significant incident" and held all traffic for a short while.

Lane one was reopened just before 3.30pm while emergency services work to clear the remaining lanes. However, traffic in the area remains heavy.

Congestion almost to Severn Bridge

The latest traffic map from Google shows congestion has now almost reached the Severn Bridge. It's still taking some 45 minutes to travel between junctions 23 and 24, on the westbound side.

All lanes reopened

All three lanes have now been reopened but traffic officers have warned of "residual congestion" in the area.

Seven-mile queue westbound

Google traffic maps show a seven-mile queue backing up to the other side of junction 23. It currently estimates a travel time of one hour between junction 23 and junction 24 (Coldra roundabout).
