Britain has finally left the EU, but what happens next?

Britain has finally left the EU, but what happens next? the united kingdom and Brussels are braced for 11 months of crunch trade talks before a 'cliff-edge' in December (and Boris Johnson wants deals with Japan and therefore the US in 2020 as well)

Britain has finally left the ecu Union but its dealings with the bloc are faraway from over.

The last three years have almost entirely been about hammering out the terms of the UK's divorce from Brussels.

Now the 2 sides must attempt to agree all of the small print of their future relationship before a standstill transition period ends in December.

The EU is adamant that 11 months isn't enough time to urge the work done, but Boris Johnson is refusing to comply with an extension, fixing a fresh Brexit 'cliff-edge' at the top of the year.

Here may be a breakdown of all the key dates within the next chapter of the Brexit saga.

January 31, 2020: the united kingdom formally leaves the ecu Union at 11pm after quite three years of tortuous wrangling. the 2 sides enter into a standstill transition period during which they're going to attempt to agree the terms of their post-Brexit relationship. EU rules will still apply to the united kingdom for the duration of the transition. The Department for Exiting the ecu Union ceases to exist.

February 2020: the united kingdom are going to be liberal to pursue trade deals with whoever it wants. Japan and therefore the US are expected to be Britain's top targets with initial talks likely to start out immediately after Brexit. the united kingdom also will want to kickstart talks with the EU - but the bloc will make Britain wait.

End of February/early March 2020: Before trade talks can start between the united kingdom and therefore the EU, the bloc must agree a negotiating mandate. This mandate will began the broad terms of what the EU are going to be striving for during negotiations and can also spell out Brussels' red lines. European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen has suggested the mandate might not be finalised until the top of February or early March.

March 2020: Formal trade talks between the united kingdom and therefore the EU are expected to start . a gaggle of 40 officials called 'Taskforce Europe' and based out of the cupboard Office will lead negotiations for the united kingdom . The taskforce are going to be headed up by David Frost, a diplomat and one-time business lobbyist who was appointed Mr Johnson's Europe adviser last year. Mr Frost is predicted to barter directly with the EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier.

Brexit plagued Theresa May's time as prime minister as she did not persuade MPs to support her EU divorce deal. She is pictured at a summit in Brussels in March last year

April/May 2020: Trade talks between the united kingdom and EU - also as talks with other nations - will intensify. If major progress has not been made with Brussels then there's likely to be increasing pressure on Mr Johnson to comply with extend the transition period. The terms of Britain's divorce from the bloc state that the standstill will finish on New Year's Eve and therefore the PM has been adamant he won't comply with an extension. But the Withdrawal Agreement does include a pressure valve mechanism which states that the transition are often prolonged by one or two years if each side agree. The EU has already said it doesn't believe the transition period is long enough to finalise a comprehensive agreement so if talks stall within the half of the year then Brussels could intensify demands for a delay.

June/July 2020: The Withdrawal Agreement states that a choice to increase the transition period must be agreed by each side before Dominion Day , 2020 if it's to travel ahead. The PM is predicted to stay to his guns and refuse to comply with a delay, setting the stage for transition to finish in December, with or without a full deal in situ .

July to November 2020: Assuming no transition extension has been agreed, the last half of the year are going to be fraught with activity because the UK and EU rush to urge everything decided. the united kingdom also will be hoping that by this point agreements with Japan and therefore the US are going to be taking shape, putting pressure on Brussels to figure quickly.
