Sealed with a kiss: Maria Sharapova with the French Open trophy

On a grey, chill afternoon Maria Sharapova found a place in paradise beyond her wildest imagination.
Sharapova’s untroubled, unspectacular triumph in the French Open final over Sara Errani, an Italian plucked from the chorus line of women’s tennis, elevated her to the company of a small, talented group to have won all four major championships.

And as she relished her accomplishment at being placed alongside Margaret Court, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf and Serena Williams, champions at Wimbledon, Paris, New York and Melbourne in the Open era of the past 44 years, there were tears of ecstasy.

‘I thought when I won Wimbledon at 17, that would be the most cherished moment of my career,’ said Sharapova after beating Errani 6-3, 6-2 .
‘But when I fell down on my knees today I realised this was extremely  special; and even more so, yeah. It’s surreal. It’s the most unique moment of my career.’
Sharapova, 25, had waited four years to fulfil her dream. She has had to reconstruct her game after surgery on a career-threatening injury to her right shoulder. She wanted to prove she was an ambitious athlete, not merely the world’s most rewarded sportswoman who reportedly earns over $20million annually.
